Islamic Design House recently sent me a Jilbab from their new mid-summer/Ramadhan season! Its this yummy number below. Its basically a traditional coat-style jilbab but taken up a notch with some urban styling elements, its definitely not your average Jordanian or Turkish Jilbab! Its nicknamed the “On the Go-Go” Jilbab
As I mentioned, this Jilbab is part of their current season and in this season they actually have two coat-style jilbabs! I like either the gown or coat style of overgarment, but since the past two reviews I received gown-style garments from them, I figrued I’d switch it up and go for a more traditional look. but, trust me when I say, this Jilbab is FAR from traditional!
Like all of the IDH garments I’ve received for review its extremely comfortable and my usual sizing fit just fine! This one has a polyester twill fabric body with very thin cotton jersey sleeves and upper back. Its a very muted two-tone garment using a beige and light sand color. Basically, it goes with everything! Straighter cut and nice deep pockets (as they tend to have) and lotsa well-sewn on buttons!
By the time these pictures were taken I had actually worn it three times…for these pictures, and for that day, my son and I walked around 4-5 miles doing errands and some shopping in two adjacent neighbourhoods in my city and I wore the jilbab over a rayon tiered skirt from OldNavy and a black crepe square scarf. Pretty simple and basic, comfortable…
Anyway, like all IDH garments the quality of the fabrics and stitching is as always, the best quality, all seams which have stress on them are over stitched. The Poly-twill is a medium weight fabric with a slight texture to it, so it feels like cotton twill. I prefer the poly-twill as it glides over ones under-garments and wont fade over time or wear out as quickly as cotton does. The sleeves and upper body are a cotton jersey which is soft and smooth with a bit of give. It’s summer here-obviously, it IS July and I had no problems wearing this garment around on 3 occasions for several hours each time! I also washed and machine dried it once and it popped out of the drier just as it went in. I also got many, many compliments on it, both from Muslims and non-Muslims alike. mashAllah.
Some of the unique-to-this-jilbab elements are 3 non-function buttons near the collar, a semi-mandarin collar (also in jersey) the fabric strips and buttons around waist area and the sweatshirt cuffs and ribbing at the deep hip pockets. This Jilbab is gored and has a really nice drape, particularly in the back and of course, no waist nipping or shoulder padding!
Obviously this jilbab is nursing friendly and suitable for those sisters which maybe want to try a coat-style jilbab but loath the shoulder padding or waist nipping of Jordanian and Turkish designs. I could easily see this design on sisters of all ages, it would be just as suitable on a sister in High School as it would be on a grown sister, taking her kids to sports practice!
Personally I could find no real issue with this garment, my only *wish* is that they have a few more coat-style jilbab offerings each season AND that they had, had this design in a darker color as don’t get me wrong, I like beige and sand as much as everyone else, but its a very bland color and I already have a few garments in similar tones, also, beige tends to show stains easier than darker colors. So, perhaps an idea for future…
Alhumdullilah this will be my first ever Islamic Design House abaya review.The abaya I got to review is my second favourite in the collection and it is called Day Dreamer. Kind of appropriate for me I guess! I must say I love all of the new collection (S17) and this one especially because of the colour; purple is my favourite colour and the design. This abaya comes with not only pockets but my favourite; a hood. Also you can see from the picture that they include an extra button in case you lose one which many companies don't bother to include.
Since I'm a housewife and my life revolves around going outdoors with the kids, shopping and to the mosque/quran classes, I decided to show how you can easily get around in a playground with your kids in my photos. (one of my kids is the photographer). This abaya is made out of polyester and is easy to take care of; out of the package it was a little wrinkled from being folded but it was easily ironed in a jiffy. Owning other abayas from IDH I can also say that they are also easy to wash and dry. I just put them on the delicate cycle. These abayas are so functional. Whether you are running around with your kids or praying or shopping or traveling by car (our family is always taking long car trips either to get halal meat or to visit the big kids) or by plane like last year all the way to Malaysia! IDH abayas are super comfy. One thing I've found though is that you have to be careful what you wear under them or else watch out for the cling effect. I have to avoid yoga pants at all costs or have all eyes on me at the mall (don't ask!) Jeans,dresses, skirts and dress pants are all ok. I've also heard that satin works great.What can I say about IDH? Their customer service is great! They listen to what you have to say and try to make you happy. For example a while back I had trouble with the Canadian site and the UK made sure I was taken care of. No worries now though as the Canadian site is perfectly fine. Also my favourite abaya was sold out and discontinued but the Canadian rep at RIS showed me that they had a very similar one out in a winter style and that made my day and I bought it right away. I also love their promotions like the one that had buy one abaya get a hijab for free. Another thing I love about IDH is that when you wear their abayas and scarves you can easily fit in and not stand out and non-muslims compliment you on your outfit.
